Welcome to Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre (BYETC).
BYETC is a Department of Education school operating within the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre at Wacol. It is a multi-campus school which caters for students, both male and female from across the state who are either on remand or have been sentenced for criminal offences. The school plays an important role in the community by providing young people in detention with the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and values that can enhance their capacity to pursue positive choices in the future.
Campuses of BYETC:
- Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre
- West Moreton Education and Training Centre (WMETC)
The BYETC and WMETC campuses facilitate a specialised education and training curriculum tailored to the needs of the young people in detention. Classes take place in purpose-built facilities with a low teacher to student ratio. With students ranging from 10 to 18 years of age, each campus offers a varied curriculum. Alignment to the Australian Curriculum with a particular focus on literacy and numeracy forms the foundation for students in the Junior School (Year 5 to Year 9). In the Senior School (Year 10 to Year 12 and beyond), vocational education certificate courses including certificates in literacy and numeracy are offered and may contribute to a student's Queensland Certificate of Education.
Our collective school improvement priorities outlined in our Strategic Plan 2021-2024 are:
- Expert Teaching Team
- Consistent Classroom Practices
- Differentiated Teaching and Learning
Our mission of 'unlocking learning' underpins our work to engage students and ensure positive learning outcomes result.
